When you look back at the white mobs who used violence to try to block black students from their white universities in the early 1960's, you see a lot of basically good people who had some very confused ideas about right and wrong, and who were very committed to harming others by denying them equality.
I think it's important that Americans not just say one form of discrimination in the past was wrong, while embracing others - it's the same underlying problem.
Those mobs were not in favor of restoring slavery; today's mobs are not in favor of denying blacks admission to those colleges.
But today's mobs have their own hate that's very similar to the mobs in the past, an irrational terror which makes them call others cockroaches and such.
Or post a picture of a young lady who may be injured just to add the comment that they don't care.
The pictures of the military in the background just complete the image, of someone who loves to have very unequal power over other people.
You feel threatened, much the way that the people I mentioned above felt threatened by change, by equality.
You may not realize it, but you are fighting for keeping other people second class. We should all be working towards a goal where the whole world can be better off - economically, with more political power/democracy, and so on.
You fail to realize that some equality is coming - and you are going to be pulled down if you keep others down. It's in all of our interest for that equality to come as much as possible by raising the standards for others.
We need to be thinking of ourselves as members of the human race first and foremost - or average Americans will have to move much closer to third world lifestyles to compete with other nations.
You do know that China is going to surpass our economy in coming years, right? If you don't want to see us become more like them, you had better drop the hatred and support rational leaders who will choose good policies, not the hate-based futile attempts you want to keep others poor.

Tax cuts for the rich; corporations get off for billions that are 'unaccounted for' but if you or I file incorrect taxes, you better believe will be audited; Medicare that doesn't work but gives billions to Pharma; and letting illegals in so huge corporations can have cheap slave labor.

Craig, people that are protesting now, unlike those that stood against the earlier waves of immigrants, are simply stating that the laws should be enforced, not that immigration should cease, which was the call when the Irish, Italians and other groups came to America.
If people are feeling threatened by these hordes of criminal aliens, (and we are, do not doubt) it is because these people are violent.
It is not safe to attend a protest. These protests often turn violent, and groups like La Raza and teh Brown Berets advocate violence against "gringos" and march in favor of forcefully "taking back their continent", which is funny since mexico didn't exist until the spanish were tossed out and "mexicans" are a mix of native and spanish blood anyway.
The Senate shouldn't reward illegal behavior and give people who are here amnesty...we want people who are here who love this country and will not tout Mexico's sovereignty over America's. Come here the right way instead of illegally!!

Kender, the violence argument is weak. These protests have been surprisingly peaceful.
Some violence is likely when there are passionate groups in conflict - from both sides.
As for the issue of California being stolen land, well, it is; you can go back as far as you like to the native populations, but the bottom line is that in the modern era, the US violated Mexico's borders to provoke a war in order to seize its land.
Sure, it's a bit late to do a lot about it now, but I sure wouldn't mind seeing our government apologize and admit the action.
Funny enough, the politics of that war have a lot in common with the 2004 election, and Abraham Lincoln sounded a lot like John Kerry in speeches.
The party out of power, with Lincoln a leading figure, had to say how they opposed the war without looking weak; they nominated the leading general (shades of the democrats trying to recruit Colin Powell at one point, and the focus on Kerry's military service).

I am not certain that You understand who works for whom. I am certain that your generous salary will allow you to purchase a copy of the Constitution of the United States of America, better yet, IF you do not have one, write your congress person, and ask for a pocket copy, in there you will find what I am about to put to paper.
The President of this country has taken a sworn oath, twice, to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." In that Copy of the Constitution, which many of you are not reading, You can look at...Article IV, Section 4 it states, "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion."
Dear Congress, You are to be our voices, You are to be our servants, NOT the other way around, You also took an oath, to that very Constitution, You are not only not living up to that oath, You are openly denigrating this great document, and by doing so, You denigrate the country, and you denigrate it's CITIZENS, the people You WORK FOR !
We, as a people, defined by borders, language, and like minded goals, have been invaded, we have an open border with Mexico, and Canada, The issue at hand is Mexico, and the very people let out of the Mexican prisons, to come here and rape, attack, and pillage United States Citizens. In the 2000 census it shows that 29% of all people held in prison are illegal invaders. I ask you this, why are we, as tax paying citizens paying for 3 hots and a cot for these invaders, as oppose to paying for a bus ticket back over the border to their beloved Mexico? This week, I saw in the streets, over a period of 2 days, upwards of a million ILLEGAL INVADERS. What I did not see, was my government protecting my border.
I live in Massachusetts, I know that again according to the year 2000 census that 25% of all hospital emergency room visits were accorded to ILLEGAL INVADERS.
I know that this is the same in many other states, with a varying degree of percentage points. I know that given those numbers, and given time, and given what You so politely call GUEST WORKERS, this country is doomed to fail as a republic of and for it's CITIZENS!
I urge you as my congress and my president, to stop the influx of ILLEGAL INVADERS, also send back the people here with out the proper papers, that is not only right IT IS YOUR DUTY TO THE CONSTITUTION! I would ask you to stop spending my tax dollars on ILLEGAL INVADERS medical, and their food, once that is cut off, they will go back home. If You fail to do this, I see a North America that has a spread of disease, and Felonies, I see a nation that will be brought to 3rd world status, by your actions.
I also urge you to do one more very important act. I would urge you to amend the Constitution, so to stop what are commonly referred to as "Anchor Babies' I am certain you have the gray matter to know what that is. The country to our north is a socialist nation, and even they have stopped naturalizing and granting citizenship to people who sneak across, or into their country to have a baby, and have that baby an automatic CITIZEN!
These things I ask, are not hard to do, what they require is for you to stop listening to your lobbyist, and begin listening to the United States citizens who put you all in office to uphold that Constitution, that so many bled and died for.

The students who are walking out of school and protesting today should really be asking themselves why their cities and states encourage illegal immigration by offering benefits to illegal aliens. That’s a slap in the face to every legal immigrant who waited in line for their chance to come to America.
My name is Michael Class. I live in the Seattle area with my wife and two children. I am a retired "dot-com" executive who just couldn't sit by and let the mis-education of our youth go unchallenged anymore.
I wrote, photographed, and published a book designed to set the record straight, to properly prepare our children for the future. My book is called Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame.
In the book, my real-life son, twelve-year-old Anthony, time-travels to 1907 and meets his immigrant great-grandfather at Ellis Island. Anthony listens as officials question the new arrivals and document their intentions in the United States. Anthony witnesses the personal impact of immigration policy: He sees some people turned away at America’s door, causing families to split up.
It's a harsh lesson: The purpose of immigration policy is to discriminate, to make choices about the people we want to admit to the United States.
Even when admitted to the United States, Anthony learns that life in the new land is anything but certain. Anthony’s great-grandfather masters the language of America - English - and works his way through school, only to end up in the trenches of World War I, and then back in America during the Great Depression. Eventually, he starts a business, rises from poverty, and raises a family.
To tell the story of America's earlier immigration experience, I used advanced digital photography to insert Anthony into historical photographs. And I didn’t stop with family history: Anthony meets famous American heroes and witnesses pivotal events of the 20th century. Anthony is pictured in the cockpit of the Spirit of St. Louis with Charles Lindbergh, on the moon with Neil Armstrong, in the laboratories of Thomas Edison and Jonas Salk, and on Normandy beach on D-Day (see photos at: www.MagicPictureFrame.com). Throughout the book, historical accuracy rules: Even Anthony’s conversations with America’s heroes are based on things they really said.
While writing and photographing the book, I spoke with relatives of famous scientists and inventors, Holocaust survivors, award-winning biographers, and others who could help me ensure that the facts of the book were both accurate and vivid. The book includes more than 500 footnotes.
But the book goes beyond a simple recitation of historical facts: the book presents the moral lessons of American history. The chapter about Lindbergh’s flight is really about choosing one’s destiny. The story of Lou Gehrig is one of a virtuous life. The chapter about Thomas Edison is really about business. The story of Apollo 11 is about wonder, taking risks, and courage. Back to the immigration issue:
When Anthony meets his immigrant great-grandfather at Ellis Island, it’s really a story about what it means to be an American. Anthony’s great-grandfather says: “I became an American because I believe in America, and it’s my belief in America that makes me an American.” Anthony comes to realize the simple truth of the statement, and remarks: “America is an idea as much as it is a place. I am no different than my great-grandfather and all the immigrants who came to this land: I can only be an American by choice.”
It's not an easy book. The book challenges the reader to see the modern world in the light of the lessons of the past.
We can't afford to raise a generation of Americans who do not value their country, their heritage, and their place in the world. As Abraham Lincoln said: America is the "last best hope of earth."

Let me get this straight, every single commenter is allowed to present their OPINION, yet Ms. Underestimated is, let's see, a "kool-aid drinker, a bad Christian (Hello? Ever heard of judge not lest ye be judged, Maimonides? You apparently apply that command selectively.) a flaming, hate-filled bigot, small-dicked, and a racist, just to name a few, for having written her opinion. How "tolerant and loving" of you! Might we expect to see this same outrage directed at the illegal aliens calling you, by virtue of the color of your skin (who are the racists here?), illegal gringos who stole their land? I suppose not, but hope springs eternal!
And for those of you stating that Reagan "created" this mess, how 'bout learning a little history?! Reagan gave amnesty to approximately 3 million illegals in 1986, which was wrong, but he was dealing with the results of immgration policy changes made in 1965. The floodgates opened in 1965 and haven't been closed since. One should think our politicians would be intelligent enough to learn from history. That apparently is not the case. Mr. Ted The Swimmer Kennedy said in 1965, "This bill will not harm American workers. Our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Immigration levels will remain essentially the same." Yeah...sure, Teddy! Clearly, he was wrong then. One has to wonder what special kind of stupidity people must possess to give him any credibility in his opinions regarding immigration now.
Craig, have you ever heard of the Treaty of Guadaloupe Hidalgo? One does not "steal" something when they pay an agreed upon price, as America did $15 million for Mexico's northern territory, territory which was rightfully won in a border dispute between the two countries. You know, the kind of wars which established the borders of neighboring countries AROUND THE GLOBE? I guess it's only worth mentioning when there's an opportunity to bash the U.S., huh?
With the exception of a few commenters, it seems most of you commenting are in the sad position of being led around by your emotions rather than logic or common sense. What else explains you complaing about Ms. U's alleged "hatred" and mean-spiritedness while engaging in it yourself? What else explains you bashing your fellow American citizen for being a "racist" for noticing that those marching were Mexicans marching under a Mexican flag, while giving those marching in the streets bashing ALL white people a pass? Emotional hypocrisy, plain and simple.
BTW, cockroaches are uninvited guests which are harmful to an environment they inhabit should they become TOO NUMEROUS. They live in the dark, trying to remain out of sight, just as illegal immigrants do. So why would that term be considered "racist" by anyone? It seems to me to be wholly appropriate for the swarming we witnessed on the streets in California, and the problem of rampant illegal immigration, in general. But then, the race card game is the "tolerant, loving, Can't-We-All-Just-Get-Along" folks' favorite...you know, those tolerant people who vilify a person for daring to express a different viewpoint or opinion in a heartbeat. Gotta love that liberal brand of "tolerance!" "We think you're great so long as you think like us!"
Goodness people, grow a pair or a spine, whichever is needed. Our country is in danger with insecure borders, no way to track or know who is coming in and living beneath the law, draining our welfare services and bankrupting the states. Many of these people have NO ALLEGIANCE to this country. This is an AMERICAN problem, not a right v. left, or a conservative v. liberal one.

How touching. Of course those Irish escaping the famine were were hungry, first and foremost, a lesson for today where people talk about things like 'rule of law'. You can't wave a magic wand and make 1) all those people fleeing poverty right next door and 2) all the low paying jobs that we seem so willing to offer them.
Those high school immigrant kids you saw marching in the streets didn't make the decision to come to this country illegally. They were brought here, or born here, and for most of them this is the only country they've ever known. Are you suggesting we visit the sins of the parents upon their children?

These people legal or illegal are not "cockroaches" they represent America. People working hard, doing what it takes to feed and care for their families. Ms. U needs to spend get out of her trailer and maybe spend sometime on the streets of LA, SF or SD and talk to these kids about their parents or grandparents...let them tell her the stories of what they have gone through to give there kids a better life. The only difference between the immigrants from Ireland and the immigrants from Mexico is the color of their skin, and maybe that is why Ms. U seems to think of them as vermin.

When you comment I would hope at least you get you facts correct. The "treaty" of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was signed with the victorious U.S. troops in control of Mexico City. The war started as a border dispute in Texas and it did not include Nevada, Wyoming, California, New Mexico, and Arizona all States "sold" in the so called treaty . To believe that after Mexico lost a war on a border dispute in TEXAS, they desided on their own free will to "sell" for 15 million dollars half their territory is IDIOTIC.
Your coment "One does not steal something when they pay an agreed upon price" is correct if is considered in a vacum. A more appropiate comment would be "One can get anything one wants when holding a gun to the head of the conquered".
The world history is indeed full of wars such as this, they are called wars of expansion. No one is bashing the U.S. for calling this war what it was. The USA is an expansionist country, so what?... Is that to terrible for you to accept?.

And the evidence tht Diebold cheated in Ohio is pretty convincing. In every precinct where there was no paper trail, there were more votes for Bush than there were registered Republicans. There was even one place that counted ten times as many votes for Bush as there were registered voters all together. Statistical analysis of the exit polling data shows the probability of the polls being off by that much is millions to one. And the discrepancies only occurred in precincts with no paper trail, that ended up going for Bush. Think about that, if you are capable.
But that's not even relevant. I wasn't saying that the election was stolen. I was merely pointing out that even if all the votes were legitimate, you STILL aren't the majority.
But you are clearly either too stupid to figure that out. Or you are too unconcerned with the truth.

El Mexica or La Raza or whatever they call it are HATE SPEECH to start with and INCITING a riot (which is also illegal) and what would be *treason* if they were US citizns - but since they are citizens of a foreign country is inciting WAR! Any threat against our nation of that magnitude is laying the groundwork for WAR between our two nations!
This kind of behavior CANNOT be tolerated whatsoever, we absolutely MUST FORCE our ELECTED officials to LISTEN to our collective voices and write some REAL Immigration REFORM laws that PROTECT our borders, ensure that NO company hires ILLEGALS any more, ensures that ALL those who become citizens FULLY learn the English language. Furthermore, ALL legal documents, all election documents will be written in American English ONLY. This is a nation with ONE language, American English. While legal immigrants are welcome to speak their native language when outside of work and public situations, they do NOT have the right to Require everyone else to deal with that language NOR can they require all legal papers to be done in Spanish or French or German or whatever... The new immigration law must include a section sepcifying that American English is the national language and the only language for legal/election/etc documents as well as the ONLY language to be used in business.
For example, employees in McDonalds MUST speak American English while working, NOT any other language. No American Citizen should be forced to listen to another language in a business setting such as that - where American English is required to be able to interact with the customer as well as other employees. It should be mandatory that to obtain a job in the USA, that you SPEAK, READ, and WRITE American English FLUENTLY... Actually that should be the requirement to obtain citizenship in the first place - instead of the 'minimal' usage of the language now required.
ANYONE who is not totally FREAKED out over the massive protests and potential acts of WAR between USA and Mexico last week have their heads buried in the sand!

If I ran this country - the way I would deal with illegal aliens is to put the army soldiers
shoulder-to-shoulder on the border & shoot every one of them & their smuggler handlers (let them "climb over their dead").
Then, I would take a brigade & kill every corrupt american politician for allowing this problem happen in the first place (they are too "wimpy" to offend anyone).
& if any come here legally - they would be required to learn the American English language for employment & benefits (because all Spanish language - requirements (except for a few chosen translators), TV/Radio channels, & other media would jammed via satellite & "cut off".
all people who hire or employ illegals would be shot! & their businesses & material belongings would be taken by the state.
many of these illegals are criminals & gangsters. look at how they treat their own people there in Mexico, especially in the "drug-run", corrupt border cities (you can read all about the crime).
All businesses (Multinationals, etc.) employing anyone overseas would be nationalized & all foreign employment would cease (jobs would come back here). any products produced overseas would have duties (the duty would be the difference between what they pay their overseas workers & what the average american worker would earn). that, plus the shipping/transport costs of producing overseas would actually be a losing money proposition.
As for these current illegal rally participants - the army would arrive & fire "real bullets" - the goal is to kill all the illegals aliens.
Mexico is good for only one thing & that is host a Nuclear weapon party & I would do that also!
